The Value of Aesthetic Medicine Training Programs

By Celine Sharendorf

Cosmetic medicine is a constantly changing field. Medical aesthetics is the name of a new branch of cosmetic medicine that combines medical knowledge with precise surgical procedures. Restoring and rejuvenating the skin is a major focus of the specialists who work at notable clinics around the world.

Let's take a look at what medical aesthetics actually means. If you are looking to either undergo a procedure or are looking to add aesthetics to your practice, there are certain procedures in this field that you should be aware of. Read on for more information.

In which instances are medical aesthetics used?

Medical aesthetic solutions are often needed by patients whose skin was damaged by burns, cancer or another trauma. These applications relate to the field of medicine, but also apply to surgical cosmetics. Plastic surgeons now have medical aestheticians by their side when they need any advice on skin reconstruction or rejuvenation.

Which treatments fall under the designation medical aesthetics?

Medical aesthetics can involve a number of different procedures, many of which are common and well known. Comprehensive analysis is outside this article's reach; however, a short introduction is useful. Six of the most common treatments are listed here:

Botox

Also known as Botox injections, this is used in neurology as well as for cosmetic surgery. This prevalent anti-ageing treatment gives patients a youthful look, by helping to manage wrinkles. Child patients with muscle disorders like cerebral palsy may benefit from its use as a treatment for managing muscle spasticity.

Rhinoplasty

This is commonly called a 'nose job'. The nose cartilage is reshaped to give it a smoother profile. It is mostly used for cosmetic applications, but it can be helpful for patients whose faces were traumatized in some way.

Sclerotherapy

A skin irritant called a sclerosant is frequently used to make thread veins on the skin's surface less visible. Even though it may take time for the effects to be noticeable, this procedure is generally successful.

Chemical peels

A gentle acid is used to remove the top layer of skin, leaving healthier layers below that will regenerate faster. There are a variety of them available that will improve the look and texture of the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Dermal fillers

This treatment comprises a variety of products (e.g. hyaluronic acid) to level out or repair the skin's surface.

Lasers and Intense Pulsed Light

This is based on the principle that skin absorbs different wavelengths of light which can in turn promote skin growth and recovery. Removing the appearance of scar tissue and wrinkles is one way this treatment is applied.

Medical aesthetics is a rapidly growing field in cosmetic medicine. Although only a small selection of the available procedures are mentioned above, they have many uses, for medical as well as purely cosmetic reasons.
