Avoid Simple Self Tanning Mistakes

By Haywood Hunter

Prior to the 1960's, the only way to get a tan was to lay out in the sun and expose the skin to harsh UV rays. Around that time studies concluded that sun exposure was linked to skin cancer and self tanning products were developed for consumer use. The formulas for these types of products have changed since that time. An instant tan without needing the sun is now easier then ever. Consumers can use the product inside their home, making self tanning a convenient method of tanning.

The best option available should always be the first consideration when shopping for self tanning products. The highest quality is desired for better consistency and results.

Each person's skin chemistry is unique. One particular self tanning product may yield great results for one person and horrible results for another. This is it can take trying several different products before the right one is found. Quality is not a factor here, it's simply a genetic thing.

The skin needs to be prepared before any self tanning product is applied to the skin. By washing thoroughly, exfoliating and drying the skin, it will be more susceptible to self tanning. In fact, it is often recommended to wait until the next day to apply any self tanning product. By exfoliating, dead skin cells are removed. If left, these dead skin cells can cause self tanning products to look uneven and have blotchy areas.

Once cleaning and exfoliation are done, the self tanning product can be applied. The best way to apply is in small circular motions, doing small areas of the body. Covering the entire body at once is usually not recommended. Working on a single area at a time allows everything to be absorbed completely before moving on to another area. By applying in a circular motion and only covering small areas at one time, the tan will come out more even and flaws will be less likely.

Areas with thicker skin such as knees, elbows and ankles do not have to be covered as thickly as the rest of the body. Many people skin these areas altogether. If self tanning products are going to be applied to these areas though, only a thin layer is needed for deep tanning.

The right shade of self tanning product is vital to this process. A person using self tanner for the first time should probably choose a lighter shade at first. Lighter shades do not show flaws in the application as well as darker shades do. This is important when in the process of trying several different products to find one that is more suitable for the person.

By simply practicing a few simple tips during the process, self tanning can be a very positive experience. With correct application of these products, it should not be possible to tell the tan was not achieved from laying in the sun. In fact, a perfect looking tan all year round can be maintained without spending a single minute exposing the skin to harmful UV rays.
