Some Basics On Breast Enlargement Surgery

By Marissa Velazquez

Breast enlargement surgery faced significant resistance from many quarters during its inception a couple of decades ago. Most of the negative arguments came from religious leaders who argued that there was an attempt to interfere with the creation of God. This has, however, changed and today it is widely accepted just like any other aesthetic or medical procedure. Common indications for the procedure include breast asymmetry, pregnancy-induced changes and sudden weight loss.

The procedure, also called mammoplasty may lead to a number of complications even when done by the best professionals. You need to be aware of these complications even as you make plans to have the surgery. Commonly encountered complications include bleeding, infections and pain. These are however fairly easy to manage. The biggest cause for concern among scientists is the increase incidence rate of cancer in persons that have been subjected to the surgery. The most likely cause for this is the fact that diagnosis of cancerous growths in these patients is very challenging.

Breasts are glands that serve a very important function in the body. They are a source of some important hormones that help to maintain the menstrual cycle and the integrity of pregnancy after conception. It is important to see an obstetrician beforehand to get professional opinion on whether or not they should undergo the surgery. There have been some isolated cases of hormonal imbalances following this surgery.

Currently, there are two main types of implants that can be used. The two types all have a shell made of silicon rubber. One of the types contains soft elastic gel and the second consists of saline. The elastic gel has the advantage of giving tissues a near natural consistency. The main disadvantage is that they require a larger incision to be created resulting in an ugly scar. Those that contain saline have greater malleability and can be reshaped easily into the desired shape.

Mammoplasty is a major operation that has to be done under general anaesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision on the lower part of the breast slightly above the crease. The lower part of the areola is an alternative route that is sometimes used. It is through this incision that a pocket for the implant is made. One the implant has been fitted the opening is stitched.

Normally, it takes a couple of weeks for one to recover from the effects of surgery. It is important to ensure that strenuous physical activities are avoided as much as possible during this period. Great care is required when handling the surgical site to avoid aggravating the injury. As long as the procedure is meticulously done, the results are usually very good.

Variations exist between different patients even when the procedure has been performed in the same centre. It is important that you understand this to avoid unnecessary disappointments. The good news is that a majority of persons undergoing the operation are satisfied with the results. A small number may require another operation in a few years.

It is very important that you always maintain a positive attitude when seeking breast enlargement procedures. A high self-esteem will help you to make more informed decisions that are not influenced by hopelessness and negativism. If you are comfortable with your physical appearance you may not even need this surgery to begin with.
