The Basic Facts Of Suntan Lotion

By Haywood Hunter

Two products that may be classified as suntan lotion are sunscreen and indoor tanning creams. These products serve different purposes. Sunscreen, which may be referred to as sunblock, protects skin from harmful UV radiation of the sun. Indoor creams aid in tanning techniques.

Some common ingredients found in indoor tanning lotions include melanin and L-Tyrosine. These products may also include ingredients such as green tea extract, copper and various oils. Some include special ingredients that help moisturize or bronze skin. As their name suggest, these products for tanning are not made for outdoor use, as they offer no protection against the sun.

Though lotions are not made for outdoor use, they can be used with tanning booths or beds that give off similar ultraviolet radiation as the sun. The products increase the amount of melanin in skin by increasing blood flow or improving melanin production.

The product that can be used outside is known as sunscreen. This formula, which is used to absorb or reflect ultraviolet rays from the sun, can come in many forms, including gel, cream and spray. Sunscreen can also prevent sunburn from prolonged sun exposure.

Generally sunscreen can be categorized as physical or chemical. Most products include inorganic or organic particulates, or chemical compounds. Physical sunblocks are made to reflect sunlight. Chemical sunblocks are made for UV ray absorption. Because this product can prevent sunburn and skin cancer caused by sun exposure, it is suggested that individuals with all skin types use some form of this product.

Suntan lotion can refer to sunblock or tanning cream products. These may be used differently, but both include formulas that are applied topically to skin. Sunscreen blocks are used as protection against exposure to the sun and tanning cream are used for indoor tanning, bronzing and moisturizing.
