Central Aspects: Cosmetic Eye Shadow

By Haywood Hunter

Cosmetic eye shadow is a product applied in the space between the eyebrows and eyelids. It is a form of makeup that is typically worn to make the eyes appear more attractive and stand out on the face. The product is made and sold by many companies, and comes in a range of textures and colors.

The product is capable of adding depth and dimension to an eye. It may also be worn to draw attention to the eyes by complementing the eye color, making it pop. Most are made using mica or powder. Although some come in a liquid, mousse or pencil formula.

This type of makeup is worn in civilizations all over the world. Generally, it is worn by females, but it may also be worn by men as well. In western societies, the product is known as feminine, though men may wear it as well. Most women have a larger gap between their eyebrows and eyelashes than men do.

Typically this makeup is worn to improve appearance. It works by mimicking the natural shadow that is created on the eyes. In theatre and plays, non-traditional shades and bright colors are applied to create a certain appearance or enhance the drama.

There are many different techniques used for application. These may change the way the makeup appears on the eye. Often, small brushes or even fingers are used to rub the makeup on. An important aspect in the process of application is blending. The color should be thoroughly blended into the skin to be effective. To remove the makeup, use baby oil, soap and water and some form of eye makeup remover.

All types of stores carry this product. Trained technicians who work in makeup stores are helpful at offering advice. They can teach you how to apply the product efficiently and suggest shades and textures that would look best for your skin. Sometimes more than one shade may be added to the lid to create a different effect or tie in colors from an outfit. There is no set way on how to wear this cosmetic.

Cosmetics have been around for a very long time. This type of makeup dates back to Egyptian burials of 10,000 BC. The Egyptians have used scented ointments and oils to treat their skin, and dyes and paints to color their hair and body for centuries. They stained their nails using henna, lined their brows and eyes with kohl and rouged their cheeks and lips. Both men and women used these cosmetics. The Greeks used perfumes, powders, eye shadows, glosses, dye and other cosmetics from an earlier period of time as well. Romans painted their faces to protect them from the evil eyes and discovered the multiple uses for different oils. The used resins and gums to repel evil spirits.

The majority of cosmetic eye shadow of today are made from sericite, mica, colorants, preservatives and magnesium stearate. Fillers are often talc. Liquid binders usually contain silicone, while dry binders are often magnesium stearate. The process of creating this product involves a balance between fillers, and dry and liquid binders. Once the combination is found, the shadow is then pressed and created. As with any product, quality is expected to vary based on the manufacturer.
